Who said being organized could not make you money?Posted by: Kelly Hackney on July 19, 2010 Well, if you create descriptive categories and filenames for the text on your website it can not only keep your sire organized but I also leads’ search engines to crawl your website with ease and efficiency. Making your site search engine friendly leads to a higher ranking and search engines liking your website and returning your domain to users leads to more traffic and of course we all know that more traffic leads to more sales. Okay, well, the more money comes after you build a solid site, but that is what we are talking about. It is very important to make sure that your URLs are “friendly” –which just means that they are easy for others, who want to, to link to your content. A URL that is full of cryptic names or numbers or is even too long can be confusing to users and deter them from using or even can cause broken links to be placed allowing them not to be able to come back to the desired location. If your URL structure is easy to follow and contains relevant words than this will not be an issue and users and search engines alike will be provided with more information about the page content. Keep in mind that when an organic search is returned through Google or other search engines the last line of the snippet is the URL and that words that the user typed in will appear in bold once returned by the engine There is a side note to writing URLs, some web developers have taken to the practice of rewriting dynamic URLs to static ones, even though Google has not problem with this procedure being used there is a word of caution here. This is an advanced procedure and if it is not done properly it can cause severe crawling issues with your website...
Description Meta tags: Make sure you make use of themPosted by: Kelly Hackney on July 19, 2010 Some people become confused when it comes to page title versus Meta descriptions. Both are used by Google and other search engines to find your website and give users a description but there is a big difference. The description Meta tag is a summary of the page content which can be a couple of sentences all the way up to a short paragraph whereas the page title is just a few words or phrases describing the topic. Meta descriptions are important because Google sometimes uses them for snippets for your pages when returning a result to the user. In other instances they will use text directly taken from the user’s query, if it better matches the search terms. Because Google looks for this information to use in the snippets for organic searches it is important to have a good Meta description for each page on your website. It is also important to make sure that each page has its own unique Meta descriptions so that the snippets are relevant as they will appear directly under your URL in returned searches. You never want to write irrelevant text that does not cover the information contained on a page. It is never a good idea to be vague or generic when writing Meta descriptions or to simply stuff the Meta description with keywords. It is also not a good practice to cut and paste text from the content into the Meta description. Always remember that unique text is much more helpful to your goals when building your website. So what we have learned here is that there is a difference, and an importance, to both page titles and Meta descriptions and when using either to help promote your website unique text is the best way to go. Create accurate page titles that are unique.Posted by: Kelly Hackney on July 19, 2010 Each and every page on your website should have a unique title. This unique title tag tells both your user and search engines what topic information is included in the page. For example if you have a custom framing business your home page title tag should list the business name and two or three main focal points from the page. When you or a consumer reach your page in an organic search, the title tag will appear in the first line of the search result. Words that were typed into the search will be bold in the title. This is a tool that helps users to know if the result they were given is going to be relevant to their need. In addition to your home page including the business name it can also include important information like the type of business or main offerings and/or the physical location of the business or website. Titles of other pages on your website should still include the business name and the main intent associated with each page. When titling pages you want to always try to choose a title that easily tells the topic of the page. You do not want to choose a title that has no relation to the information provided on the page and you do not want to use default or generic titles such as “new page” or “not titled”. You should also avoid copying the same page title to all of your pages. It is a much better practice to create a unique title for each page. Try to use brief but informative titles. If a title is too cumbersome, Google will not be able to display the full title and it will not benefit your user or your ranking. A large no-no is to stuff keywords into your title tags. Basically, if you keep in mind that the end user if your main goal in building your website you will avoid a lot of pitfalls that will make it harder for your consumers and also for Google and other search engines to help market your website to the consumer. What is most important when designing a website?Posted by: Kelly Hackney on July 19, 2010 According to the experts at Google, when designing your website you should never design with SEO only in your mind rather they are adamant that you design the website for the best interests of the visitor. They are the main reason for the website and ultimately they are the one using the engine to search for the website. They suggest that if you keep the end user in mind when designing the webpage rather than using specific tweaks in mind in order to gain rank in organic search results that you will have far better results. SEO really is all about putting you’re the best site you can out there and making it visible for search engines. Here is a checklist of items that are important to insuring your website is search engine optimized. In later discussions I will go further in depth into each topic, for those of you who are interested in learning all you can about building a solid website geared to search engine optimization.
